Warm Mulled Wine Punch

 

Warm Mulled Wine Punch

1 large orange
1 large lemon
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup raw sugar
4 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
2 bottles of merlot wine

Fully zest both the orange and the lemon and set the zest mixture aside. Once the fruit is zested, slice both the orange and the lemon into thin round slices (thinner is better, to extract the natural extracts).

In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, combine the 1/2 cup of water, orange and lemon zest, raw sugar, cinnamon sticks and whole cloves. Stir to blend and bring mixture to a low boil. Simmer at a low boil for 5 minutes. Reduce heat to “warm” and add in the 2 bottles of wine along with the orange and lemon slices. Heat on “warm” setting for 45 minutes (do not let mixture return to a boil). Remove the cloves and cinnamon sticks and transfer the warm mulled wine punch into a punch bowl. You may pierce a few of the orange slices with the cloves to float in the punch, and set aside the cinnamon sticks for guests to use as optional garnishes. Makes 10 punch glass size servings.
